Dr. Lena Herbst was recently a guest on UNhörbar, the German-language podcast of the United Nations Association of Germany (DGVN), where she discussed the role of the United Nations in international cybersecurity negotiations.
Information security has been on the UN’s agenda for many years. Cyber threats affect nearly every area in which the organization is active and the UN itself is repeatedly targeted by cyberattacks. At the same time, the political landscape is highly complex: digital power and interests are unevenly distributed among states, large tech companies hold significant influence, and the field is evolving at a rapid pace.
In conversation with hosts Steve Biedermann and Patrick Rosenow, Lena Herbst, postdoctoral researcher in the International Cybersecurity project at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) sheds light on this complex landscape, from the UN Convention against Cybercrime to the implications of ongoing UN reforms.
